Bombing Your Own Engine on Purpose
Lord Rayleigh described in 1878 how heat release in phase with a pressure wave amplifies it, and eighty years later that exact physics was tearing F-1 engines apart on Huntsville-managed test stands. The fix was verified by detonating small bombs inside running combustion chambers to prove the injector baffles could kill the oscillation before it killed the engine. It remains one of the great brute-force chapters in applied acoustics...
Asphalt, Laughing Gas, and a Motor Safe Enough for a Club
HALO's rocket burned road asphalt in a stream of nitrous oxide, and the reason a volunteer club could handle it at all is chemistry: a hybrid keeps its solid fuel and liquid oxidizer in separate phases, so there is nothing to detonate until you deliberately mix them in the chamber. The safety comes at a price in specific impulse, and the tradeoff between how much thrust you get and how likely you are to blow up the garage is...
From Backyard Static Firings to the First Private Spacecraft
A club member with a business degree and no engineering diploma championed a cheap asphalt hybrid, carried that hands-on experience to Mojave, and became propulsion lead on the first privately crewed spacecraft before coming home to found and then sell a propulsion company. It is Huntsville's clearest documented case of hobby infrastructure feeding the commercial-space workforce — and a window into how X Prizes convert garage tinkering into industry the way cost-plus contracts a few miles away never quite do...
