Stylized blueprint portrait of Augustin-Jean Fresnel

Augustin-Jean Fresnel

1788 – 1827

Wave optics and the zones used in RF path clearance.

A French engineer and physicist, Fresnel established the wave theory of light in the 1810s and the zone construction that bears his name — the same geometry that determines clearance for radio paths.

The Fresnel-zone tool here uses his zones to size the clearance a radio link needs over an obstacle.
