Stylized blueprint portrait of Robert Manning

Robert Manning

1816 – 1897

Gave open-channel flow its working formula.

An Irish engineer, Manning gave open-channel flow its working formula in 1889 — an empirical relation for the velocity of water in a channel that civil engineers still use for rivers, canals, and sewers.

The open-channel-flow tool here uses Manning's equation and his roughness coefficients.
