W. R. Bennett

1904 – 1983

Bell Labs; derived the quantization-noise law behind ENOB.

A Bell Labs communications engineer, William R. Bennett produced the 1948 analysis of quantization noise in pulse-code modulation — the 6.02N + 1.76 dB law that defines the resolution limit of every analog-to-digital converter.

The ADC and ENOB tools here compute Bennett's line, published the same year as Shannon's information theory and the transistor.
