The engineering
Air changes per hour is how many times the full room volume is replaced by supply air in one hour. It's the currency for sizing exhaust and dilution ventilation — labs, kitchens, clean spaces, mechanical rooms — where a code or standard hands you a target ACH and you need the fan CFM to hit it. The factor of 60 just converts the per-hour volume rate into cubic feet per minute.
Watch your volume: ACH counts the whole geometric room, so an open plenum or a tall ceiling inflates the CFM you need. ASHRAE 62.1 sets ventilation by people and floor area rather than raw ACH, so use ACH targets for contaminant dilution and check the 62.1 breathing-zone number separately — the larger of the two governs.
Where this math comes from
The air-change concept predates thermodynamics classes: 19th-century hospital and mine ventilation engineers already reasoned in terms of replacing the 'foul air' in a space so many times per hour. Max von Pettenkofer's 1858 work fixing a CO₂ threshold for indoor air gave the whole practice a measurable dilution target instead of a smell test.
The ASHRAE lineage runs through its 1895 founding predecessor (ASH&VE) and Standard 62, first issued in 1973 and continuously revised as Standard 62.1. Modern practice mostly cites 62.1's people-plus-area ventilation rates, but ACH survives as the working shorthand every balancing tech still uses at the diffuser.
