The engineering

The IIW carbon equivalent rolls a steel's alloy chemistry into a single number that tracks hardenability of the weld heat-affected zone. Higher CEq means the HAZ quenches harder as the weld cools, and a hard, brittle HAZ combined with dissolved hydrogen and residual stress is the recipe for cold (hydrogen) cracking. Reach for it during WPS development or when qualifying a mill cert against a shop's preheat practice.

Rule of thumb: CEq below 0.40% is generally weldable without preheat; 0.40–0.50% calls for preheat and low-hydrogen consumables; above 0.50% you plan for preheat, hydrogen control, and often post-weld heat treatment. CEq is only half the story — section thickness, hydrogen level, and restraint set the actual preheat via methods like AWS D1.1 Annex or the Yurioka approach. Treat the number as a screen, not a verdict.

Where this math comes from

As higher-strength structural steels spread through 1940s–50s bridge and ship fabrication, welders kept finding delayed cracks in the HAZ hours or days after a weld had cooled. The International Institute of Welding (IIW), founded in 1948, collected the field data and distilled it into a weighting formula: carbon dominates, manganese counts a sixth as much, the strong carbide-formers a fifth, and nickel and copper only a fifteenth.

The IIW formula became the reference carbon equivalent and was folded into fabrication codes worldwide, including AWS D1.1 and EN standards. Later work by Ito, Bessyo, and Yurioka produced alternative equivalents (Pcm, CEN) that behave better for modern low-carbon microalloyed steels, but the IIW expression remains the one most engineers reach for first.
