The engineering
Process sigma level maps a defect rate onto the normal curve: it is how many standard deviations fit between the process mean and the nearest spec limit. The Six Sigma convention adds a 1.5σ 'long-term shift' to account for drift the short-term study never sees — which is why the famous 6σ target corresponds to 3.4 DPMO rather than the 0.001 DPMO a pure short-term Z of 6 would give.
Reach for this when a report quotes yield or PPM and you need it in sigma, or vice versa. Watch the shift toggle: if your data is short-term/within-subgroup capability, set shift to zero — otherwise you will overstate the level by exactly 1.5σ. Also note this is the one-sided tail; for two-sided specs with defects on both ends the DPMO doubles.
Where this math comes from
Sigma level as a business metric was born at Motorola in the mid-1980s, when engineer Bill Smith and executive Mikel Harry pushed a company-wide quality campaign after Japanese competition exposed how many defects were escaping. Smith's insight was to count defects per opportunity rather than per unit, letting complex products with millions of solder joints be compared on one scale.
The controversial 1.5σ shift came from Motorola's observation that a process centered in the short term wanders over the long haul; they folded that empirical margin into the definition so that '6 sigma' quality tolerated realistic drift. General Electric's aggressive adoption under Jack Welch in 1995 made the vocabulary universal, and ASQ later codified the DPMO-to-sigma conversion in its Six Sigma Body of Knowledge.
