The engineering

Takt time is the rate at which you must complete one unit to exactly match customer demand — the drumbeat a lean line is paced to. Reach for it when balancing a line, sizing crews, or deciding whether a process can keep up: if your actual cycle time per station stays at or below takt, you meet demand; if any station runs slower, that station starves the line.

Two gotchas. First, 'available time' is net — subtract breaks, planned maintenance, and changeovers before dividing, or your takt will be too optimistic. Second, takt is a target, not throughput: you deliberately run cycle time slightly under takt to absorb variation. The word comes from the German Takt, a musical beat or baton stroke.

Where this math comes from

The concept traces to 1930s German aircraft manufacturing, where Takt described the interval at which airframes advanced through assembly stations — literally the beat that moved the line. Mitsubishi engineers carried the idea to Japan through a technical exchange, and Toyota absorbed it into the Toyota Production System as the pacing mechanism that ties every process back to real customer demand.

Takt time reached Western practitioners in force through Mike Rother and John Shook's 1998 Learning to See, which put value-stream mapping and takt calculation into the hands of ordinary plant engineers. Their treatment made takt the anchor of any current-state map: compute it first, then design flow to hit it.
